A Little History

Ilminster an attractive market town.

The Best Western Shrubbery Hotel stands on a site previously occupied by a private house named, 'Crosses' which dated back to the 17th century. Apparently cloth dyeing took place on the premises.

In the 1850s the property was purchased by H.H. Shepherd, who built an imposing Victorian house around the original building. Mr Shepherd, allegedly, made his fortune from selling hessian and jute to both sides in the American Civil War. His wealth enabled him to become a major landowner and benefactor to the town and he owned a large factory on the outskirts of Ilminster.

The premises were converted into an hotel in 1932.
